Authentic Experiences

The sounds of turnips

“Authentic Experiences” by Western Toilet. You can always listen to us on SoundCloud as well.

This little shorty features footage from a very small town outside of Lijiang in Yunnan province. Among ourselves, we called the town Turnip Mountain, because it was up on a mountain and the way there was covered in turnip fields. A friend told us that a decade or so earlier, before the transportation infrastructure around Lijiang was so good, turnips were really the only fresh vegetable they could get in the winter time. Now, of course, they can get most foods at most times — like most places.

These kids were on their way to the local hardware store to get a hammer. That’s really all there was to that interaction. But they were quite cute.

“Fu” — official music video

The Music of Hello Uncle Foreigner

Subscribe to Western Toilet on YouTube, or give Hello Uncle Foreigner a listen on SoundCloud.

The footage in this video comes from Jiangyang Park, which is about half a kilometer from our apartment. People really do all kinds of things in the park, from martial arts and dancing to painting calligraphy and hanging out with their birds. There’s a reservoir down the hill that I like to go running around.

And then now ...

The Music of Hello Uncle Foreigner

More music is at Western Toilet

“And then now” is one of my favorite segments to make. For each one, I spend about two or three days walking around the neighborhood and setting the camera down for a few minutes to capture the mundane action of people living their lives. (Does it feel a little creepy? Sometimes!) Peter then edits the longer footage into 5 second clips of the most interesting moments and puts them all together. I think it really captures the feeling of living our lives, without imposing any kind of narrative. Existentialism!

A jazzy walk around the “Nabe”

The Music of Hello Uncle Foreigner

Enjoy the soundtrack from Uncle’s Shorts #40.

Every apartment building has a rooftop. Otherwise the rain would get in. We finally ventured up to ours in the filming for last week’s video. And it’s just a roof, with people’s laundry hanging, some fruits and vegetables drying in the sun, a small garden — typical for this part of China. But the view is spectacular!

Placed where we are on the Luzhou peninsula, we can see the Tuo river to our north and the Chang river to our south — which you may know as the mighty, mighty Yangtze. Whatever you call it, it’s something to look at.

An oboe for “Museums”

Making last week’s episode, “Cultivated progress”, was a lot of fun. We love talking about, thinking about, and making art! So here’s some extra art: the episode’s soundtrack.

The Commons

The Music of Hello Uncle Foreigner

This piece came together out of a few happenstances: “The tragedy of the commons, I want to do something with that” is actually something I said to Peter while writing the various dance pieces that we are incorporating into Uncle’s Shorts. “What if you just say exactly that?” Peter suggested. It worked better than anywhere that phrase took me, so …

And then, when it came time to film me doing the Time Step, the camera (our Eagle) glitched out. (It’s a lovable quirk of that camera that in any given session, it’s started glitching out the first file. Yay for knock-offs!) I did some work to recover the file, and it looked pretty cool.

But, kind of too long for a dance piece, which are segments that we are keeping to about 30 seconds or so. But, as a music video …

And that’s how we got to “The Commons.”
