Back away from the expensive pants

A shopping adventure

The search for a decent, but cheap, pair of pants.

Baseline: I hate clothes shopping, so it’s even worse in a country where I regularly max out the size of what’s available. But, that can turn into a handy excuse when I’ve accidentally tried on a pair of pants that is too expensive.

Also, stick around after the story for a recent Taobao purchase, a complaint, and a viewer comment of the week!

A McCheese of noble and delicate stature

Chinese McDonald’s has different stuff

Sometimes it’s time for McDonald’s

I saw this cheese-filled monstrosity on the McDonald’s menu and I had to try it. It wasn’t that great, but it came with a surprise lesson in Chinese language and literature. I’m always learning!

Pork or Chicken for Chinese New Years

A giraffe decides

For the year of the Pig, we have hot dogs!

For a more traditional Chinese New Year experience, a big family dinner would be in order. But because it’s just us, Peter and I had a Foreigners’ Spring Festival — which still entailed staying in and eating, but our meal was 100% macaroni & cheese and hot dogs. We bought some green beans, for health, but we forgot to cook them. 新年快乐!

Getting ready for Chinese New Year 2019

It’s the Year of the Pig!

Here comes the Year of the Pig.

Though we appreciate the time off, we’re not big into celebrating Chinese New Year … mostly because we don’t have a family in China to go see. But one aspect of the holiday that I really appreciate is the little door guardians. I think the pigs this year are very cute. I bought them at the supermarket!

You have got to live somewhere

We chose China

The place you live is always somewhere.

We continue to consider the fact that we are not leaving China, for now. It’s a tricky business, choosing where to live. Every society has its flaws. But I think that puts on us the responsibility to to the good we can, where we can. When we can. How we can … How do I get out of this loop?!

Number 8 will always surprise you

Who’s leaving China?

Look out for eight …

We have many reasons for not leaving China. I’m sure you have many reasons for living where you live.

New China vlog channel, same China vlog fun

We cyber-moved on YouTube

The giraffe premieres!

Here’s the news: We moved our YouTube channel. I’ll get into why at a later date, but for now, update your bookmarks to Hello Foreigner. It’s the same great China vlogging, without the bias towards Uncles!

Getting around problems

Who dares interrupt the Cane?!

Sometimes your own two feet need a little extra help. Well, never fear. The Cane is here!

The shoot of our fiction piece was fairly painless this week … because we did a ton of organization pre-production. First pass was some pretty tight blocking of the action, and then second, we made a pretty detailed shot list. We did a run-through a few times the day of, and made sure we were totally happy with how our shots were laid out. And then … ACTION?

In the edit, we had to cut a couple of lines that I loved from an early draft of the script, but they just didn’t fit. It continues to be true that what you leave out of your work can be as important as what you put into it. If you’re curious, the lines were a reference to the fact that astronauts have to run on treadmills to maintain bone density. I am fascinated by this idea, but it didn’t work within the flow of our final script.

What are you doing?!

And can I have some? Featuring the return of Panda Rat

Our first vlog without a vlog.

Peter’s been composing original soundtracks for Uncle’s Shorts for a while now, but this week is features our first song with vocals! And she is a sassy girl.

The episode is an attempt to provoke the question “What are you doing?!” It’s a question we get a lot, so we figured, why not aim for it. Also, we expand our world of characters a little bit, bringing back Panda Rat, and introducing ceiling rat ghost and thieving wontons. The wontons are from a nearby dumpling place, and they are absolutely delicious: fresh-rolled and the soup is seasoned just-so. Just, watch your knives when you order. They have started going missing …

Watch the video. It’ll make sense.
