existentialism

Why care about the environment?

Because it’s all we’ve got!

Follow more stories of our China life at Hello Foreigner on YouTube.

The environment, in terms of the ecology of a place, is in trouble. And we’re all wearing too many pants.

Environment as ambience is a little more subjective … so we’re doing OK there.

And then now ...

The Music of Hello Uncle Foreigner

More music is at Western Toilet

“And then now” is one of my favorite segments to make. For each one, I spend about two or three days walking around the neighborhood and setting the camera down for a few minutes to capture the mundane action of people living their lives. (Does it feel a little creepy? Sometimes!) Peter then edits the longer footage into 5 second clips of the most interesting moments and puts them all together. I think it really captures the feeling of living our lives, without imposing any kind of narrative. Existentialism!

Cultivated progress: Making art, individuality & punks behind Chinese walls

Uncle’s Shorts #38

We tackle Art this week, in about 8 minutes. So, you know … it’s pretty thorough.

The ending animation we did with our new Adonit Pixel stylus and this nifty animation app I found for my iPad. Animation, as you may know, is pretty labor intensive, but it’s also a lot of fun, so we’re excited to start expanding our repertoire in that direction.

Dave’s interview takes place outside of Luzhou, actually, in a suburb called Naxi. He brought us to this great little BBQ place, where you cook your own meats right on the table. I love cooking my own meats right on the table!

Time keeps on slipping

Uncle Foreigner gets existential

China can be a really chaotic place. Forget about plans changing last minute; sometimes plans aren’t even made until the last minute. Just today, I was part of another surprise photo shoot at school. It’s a difficult way to get things done.

But you can wail against the flow, or gracefully bob along on the tide. One way is a heck of a lot more likely to be a pleasant journey. One way is also a lot more honest about how much control we actually have over our lives…
