Why care about the environment?

Because it’s all we’ve got!

Follow more stories of our China life at Hello Foreigner on YouTube.

The environment, in terms of the ecology of a place, is in trouble. And we’re all wearing too many pants.

Environment as ambience is a little more subjective … so we’re doing OK there.

Structuring the giraffe episodes

How we get all this vlogging done

Keep up with the podcast by subscribing to Hello Uncle Foreigner on YouTube.

The giraffe videos started out as kind of a free-form experiment. If there was an idea, I’d put on the giraffe suit and tell the camera. But as we went on, it started to develop a real structure of its own. And we liked it, so we kept it.

No sleep ’til nap time

The less well-known Chinese “siesta”

Follow our stories on YouTube at Hello Foreigner.

Everyone knows about the Spanish siesta, but did you know that China has an unofficial nap time after lunch as well? They do! Our building even turns off the ads in the elevator from noon to 2pm so that it’s quiet. Supermarkets and stores are still open, but government buildings and schools also take a break during that time. So, whatever you do, don’t try to go to the post office.

It’s fine

Back away from the expensive pants

A shopping adventure

The search for a decent, but cheap, pair of pants.

Baseline: I hate clothes shopping, so it’s even worse in a country where I regularly max out the size of what’s available. But, that can turn into a handy excuse when I’ve accidentally tried on a pair of pants that is too expensive.

Also, stick around after the story for a recent Taobao purchase, a complaint, and a viewer comment of the week!

Pork or Chicken for Chinese New Years

A giraffe decides

For the year of the Pig, we have hot dogs!

For a more traditional Chinese New Year experience, a big family dinner would be in order. But because it’s just us, Peter and I had a Foreigners’ Spring Festival — which still entailed staying in and eating, but our meal was 100% macaroni & cheese and hot dogs. We bought some green beans, for health, but we forgot to cook them. 新年快乐!
