Snaps: Me and Me

My favorite subject

Me and the staff

For the Anniversary, the school put up several posters featuring historical photos — including one with last year’s staff picture. Can you find me, twice?

Snaps: Morning commute

Stand clear of the closing doors

Outside our apartment

The walk from my apartment to class is about 4 minutes. It’s pretty sweet.

Snaps: Thermoses

Drink your hot water

The thermos pile

In China, tap water is non-potable. We have an electric kettle in which we boil ours to safety, but the students don’t have electrical outlets in their dorms. Instead, they have large thermoses that are filled with hot water for them. At right is a thermos collection point by the cafeteria.

Snaps: Neighbor Baby

The littlest big man on campus

It's neighbor baby!

Our little apartment block is home to about 20 families, and everyone is unfailingly friendly and kind. But the friendliest and kindest has to be the boy that we call Neighbor Baby (because we don’t know his name). He’s always excited to say hello to us and show off his English — of which his parents and grandparents are quietly but assuredly proud. But he’s always chatting with everyone in our small world of Tianfu Middle School, dispensing baby advice, baby stories and baby wisdom, I’m sure. I’ve seen adults faces light up when he greets them; I’m sure that mine does when he greets me. He’s the prince of our little corner of the world.

Neighbor Baby’s vocabulary:

  • Hello
  • How are you
  • Rabbit
  • Good-bye
  • Teacher

☆ Side Quest: Puppets of the World

Objective: Visit the World Puppetry Festival

The world puppetry festival is not to be for us

While we were in Chengdu, we saw a bunch of signs for the 21st UNIMA Congress and World Puppetry Festival. And then, out for a walk, we actually stumbled on the site of the festival. And a show was starting right then. It was all perfect. We had to go!

Except it was all sold out

The quest gets back on track tomorrow …

Snaps: By the Changjiang River

Also known as: The mighty Yangze

The river viewI'm touching the water!

On a walk down by the river (which you probably better know by the name Yangtze), we saw these tourists taking photos. I laughed at them a little bit — why do you need a photo of yourself in the river? — but then immediately wanted to go touch the water for myself. (Which would be the first time, even though we’ve been here many months already.) Peter snapped a photo, and we ended up with the same picture that I laughed at someone else for taking!

Snaps: Spring in bloom

And the purple flowers are here

The purple flowers

From very early on, Peter’s student Yang Yang has put herself forward as a girl enthusiastic about learning English. The other day, she grabbed Peter between class and dragged him away saying, “Hurry, hurry! Come with me.”

She took him up to the walkway between the science building and the main senior classes building and pointed something out. She couldn’t quite articulate what she wanted Peter to look at, but then he saw the beautiful blooming purple flowers on the tree. “Oh, the flowers!” Peter said. “Yes!” said Yang Yang.
